    Ceiling Fan Size Calculator

Enter your room dimensions and ceiling height. We follow the ENERGY STAR blade-span guidelines and the 7-foot blade-clearance safety rule.

Quick answer: Multiply room length by width for square feet, then match it to the ENERGY STAR brackets: up to 75 sq ft needs a 29 to 36-inch fan, 76 to 144 sq ft needs 36 to 42 inches, 144 to 225 sq ft needs 44 inches, and 225 to 400 sq ft needs 50 to 54 inches. Blades must hang at least 7 feet above the floor. Use the calculator above for your exact room.

How to measure for a ceiling fan in 3 steps

    1. Measure the room: length times width in feet. For L-shaped or open-plan rooms, measure only the area the fan will serve.
    2. Measure ceiling height floor to ceiling. Under 8 ft needs a low-profile (hugger) mount. At 9 ft and above, use a downrod so blades hang 8 to 9 ft above the floor.
    3. Check clearances: blades need 18 inches from walls and 7 feet above the floor (building code). Over 400 sq ft, plan two fans instead of one oversized unit.

    Downrod length by ceiling height

Blade height matters as much as blade span. The sweet spot is blades 8 to 9 feet above the floor: low enough to move air where you feel it, high enough to clear heads. On a 10-foot ceiling, that means roughly a 12-inch downrod. On 8-foot ceilings, skip the downrod and use a hugger mount.

    Common ceiling fan questions

What size fan for a 12×12 bedroom?

A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft, which sits on the boundary: a 36 to 42-inch fan works, or step up to 44 inches if the ceiling is high or you prefer slower, quieter speeds.

Can a ceiling fan be too big?

Yes. An oversized fan in a small room looks heavy, can feel drafty on low, and wastes energy. Match the bracket; do not size up just in case.

Do ceiling fans help in winter?

Yes, with a reversible motor. Run the fan clockwise on low to push warm air pooled at the ceiling back down without a cooling draft.
